Therapy & Counselling

Counselling is the skilled and principled use of a relationship to assist a client to develop self-knowledge, emotional acceptance and growth, as well as guidance to learn how to use one’s strengths optimally. We offer individual, couple, and family counselling. Some of our therapists also offer animal-assisted therapy.

The way counselling ‘looks’ or ‘feels’ is specific to the client’s needs. Whether the concern is worry/anxiety, low mood/depression, emotional regulation, social skills, relationship difficulties (e.g., teen friendships), parenting strategies or other challenges affecting everyday function, counselling can help.

We offer a number of different approaches to therapy including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), emotion-focused therapy, EMDR, and DBT.

What is a Registered Counselling Therapist (RCT)?

A Registered Counselling Therapist (RCT) is a highly qualified therapist who belongs to both national and provincial licensing bodies.  In Canada, this is the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and in Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists (NSCCT).  RCTs meet stringent, graduate-level education clinical and training standards. RCTs are also licensed as Canadian Certified Counsellors (CCC), a national designation for counsellors that allows them to practise  across Canada. The minimum education requirement for both licensures is a master’s degree in counselling or counselling psychology and, for RCT, the master’s program must have an undergraduate degree in psychology or related discipline as one of its prerequisites.
